Keynote Speakers

Hugo de Vries

Hugo de Vries is research director at INRAE, member of its Scientific Directory Team ‘Food, Nutrition and Bioeconomy’, France. He is Past-President of the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST), member of the FAO-led International Sustainable Bioeconomy Working Groupand coordinator of the European Project ‘FOODPathS’ (Co-creating the Prototype ‘Sustainable FOOD Systems PArTnersHip’). He is associated international member of the French Academy of Agriculture. Previously he was heading the Joint Research Centre IATE (transformation of renewable resources into food, bio-energy and biomaterials), the Food Technology Research Centre of Wageningen UR, and the European Integrated Project NovelQ (novel processing methods for the production and distribution of high-quality and safe foods). He obtained a PhD in physics and held several positions around the globe.

Howard Moskowitz

Howard Moskowitz received his PhD in Psychophysics in 1969 from Harvard University. During the past 55 years he has worked in areas as diverse as food, cosmetics, law, medicine, and now world peace, bringing to these fields his science of Mind Genomics. His focus now is to use Mind Genomics empowered artificial intelligence (SCAS: Socrates as Service) to give the students of the world a chance at better education through technology and critical thinking.  And, of course, he still works in the world of food to identify how to create new foods, but at the same time how to convince people to eat and live more healthfully.

Sebastiano Poretta

Sebastiano Porretta is President of AITA, the Italian Association of Food Technology and first food scientist of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (formerly Ministry of Industry).
Well known to the scientific community for his food product development research, he is coordinating National and International research projects aiming to create new food market segments.
Author hundreds of papers published in International journals, books, and author/editor of over 30 specialist books.  Prof. Porretta has been scientific coordinator of the main biennial conference “Italian Congress on Food Science and Technology” and serves on editorial boards of several international peer reviewed journals including as scientific director of Italian Food Ingredients and Functional Foods journals. Member of the International Union of Food Science and Technology Board of Directors (2020-2022). Fellow of the Academy of the International Academy of Food Science & Technology since 1998. Chairman of the 22nd IUFoST World Congress on Food Science and Technology.

Announcing IUFoST Distinguished Lecturer for the Rimini World Congress

IUFoST is honoured and delighted to announce that Dr. Steve Wearne, Chair of FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) will deliver the Distinguished Lecture at the 22nd IUFoST World Congress in Rimini, Italy.

Bio

Dr. Steve Wearne has a career spanning over 30 years in food regulation in UK government and internationally, including over 20 years in the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA).  During this time, he has worked on issues across food policy and science, from additives and sweeteners to veterinary residues and other contaminants in food, to modernisation of regulatory practice. For the past 20 years, Dr. Wearne has been a senior civil servant leading teams within the FSA. His roles have included Director of Policy & Science from 2013 to 2019 and, most recently, Director, Global Affairs.  Elected by Codex member countries to the position of Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in November 2021,  Dr. Wearne had served for the previous four years as Vice-Chairperson for this global food safety and quality standards setting body.

Dr. Wearne has also advised other parts of UK government on agri-food strategy, including as joint leader of the secretariat to the Trade and Agriculture Commission (2020-2021) and as adviser to the Food Strategy White Paper team (2021). He is a scientist by training, with a degree in biochemistry and a period of postgraduate research in molecular biology.

Joachim von Braun is Distinguished Professor for Economic and Technological change at Bonn University, in the Center for Development Research (ZEF).  His research is on economic development, food nutrition and agriculture, bioeconomy, resource and environmental economics, science and technology policy. von Braun is President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences of the Vatican, and member of German National Academy of Science Leopoldina, the German Academy of Engineering, other academies, and the International Science Council. In 2020 and 2021 he served as Chair of the Scientific Group for the Food Systems Summit 2021 of the UN Secretary General. He was director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) based in Washington DC. He published more than 250 peer reviewed publications.
